A Walk to Remember
Part II
Stand at the spiral staircase on the third floor and look towards our block. You will see one stark difference among the three express classes there. Okay, we all know what the “stark difference” is so I am going to spare you the horror of reading my so-not-fabulous description.
(By the way, I changed my mind.) Sandwiched between two different classes is a class teachers love to talk about. Seriously, imagine teachers sitting in the staff lounge:
Teacher 1: You know 4S2...
Teacher 2: (interrupted teacher 1) Of course I know lah! (Why Singlish?) That class ah so aiyoh! Every time I ask them to do this, they do that. Every time I ask them to do this, they do that. Every time they do that, I ask them to do this. Irritating.
Teacher 1: Yes...
Teacher 2: Furthermore... they so the very complacent! Don’t want to do homework... never pay attention in class. Lan de guan. (Yes, we know... We know...)
Teacher 1: But they also...
Teacher 2: I seriously headache when I think of them. Unlike the other two classes, who are obviously very hard-working and attentive, they are just the total opposite!
Teacher 1: 4S2...
Teacher 2: Is so aiyoh! That class ah... Eh? Wait! Where you going? I haven’t finished the story! That teacher is so aiyoh! I talk, he walk away! I talk, he walk away! He walk away, I talk!
Okay, those are fictional. I have no idea what happen in the staff lounge or in teachers’ conversation for that matter. However, what I do know is our shared experience for the past two years. There are probably a lot of things that happened over the past two years that we can barely remember all the things we went through. So, here are the major events that I can think of. So, let’s get the ball rolling (another cliché.) So, let’s start the records spinning! Fasten your belts to your Gucci seats and hold on tight to your Guess bags because we’re moving at the speed of light backkkkkkkkkk to Sec 3!
You know, back in sec 3... Some of us were not with our usual sec 2 clique. So, sec 3 was a new change. Anyway, I think in the first few months we were all starting to get to know each other, build the trust and the vibes. We were a quiet class. (Can you believe it?!) Seriously, we were quiet back in Sec 3. I was like, “Gosh. This class is so quiet.” Ku kept on assuring me, “No worries. Once we all settle down, you’ll see the true colours start pattering around!” (Well, he didn’t exactly say that...)
The next major event I remembered was the Sec 3 Camp. A few people did not turned up for the camp; say 4 to 6? Many of those who did enjoyed their stay at Pulau Ubin. We were all dispersed in different groups, and had groups themed of different kinds of animals. Learned various different cheers, danced after campfire, did things we might not have a chance to do anymore. Remember the rock climbing? Pauline got to the highest square. The night walk, with fireflies and the night sky? Some girls had to walk alone. Do you still remember your group names and instructors?
Of course, some of our students went on to OBS, which was evidently tougher but just as memorable. Being one of those who did not have the chance to go OBS, I stayed in the empty class wondering what on this beautiful Earth might my other classmates be doing. I was expecting some of them who went to come back sunburnt and leaner. Well, the sun block that I borrowed to one of them sure came back empty.
All these, and the leaders in our class, bring to the fact that we emerged champions for the Sec 4/5 in Sports Carnival in 2008. Do you notice? We have a lot of leaders like Beryl, Peck Joon, Keech; a couple of Exco-members; vice-head councillor; people who have contributed to the school in one ways or another; people who achieved a lot of awards like our BB members.
So, we fast forward to sec 4. As you see, cliques have started to form. Together with the cliques, inside jokes too start to form. That was why when Mrs Lee first came in; we had a couple of inside jokes that got her wondering. Slowly, some of the jokes evolved and some died off. Some stayed. Some will be a conversation opener ten years down the road.
Most of sec 4 were filled with extra classes and what so nots. Yes, we did have racial harmony, tons of photos, sports carnivals, tons of photos, national day, tons of photos, photo-taking, tons of photos and tons of photos. Mainly, we got a lot prep talks, and teachers getting angry all to prepare us for our then upcoming o levels. We have people getting angry, competitions between friends, stress and everything associated to that.
Talking about competition, what happened to our soccer-basketball competition? Are we like going to come back to finish what’s undone?! Hahha, we didn’t even get our MVP. The last time I checked, and please tell me if I’m wrong... Ku, Sean Wee and another dude were on the MVP list. It was not confirmed yet at that point of time, you see. Uhmm...
This has been a wordy post in the attempt to bring to life our shared past events. At the end, I just want to say that we are all just one step away for the finishing line. What we have been working for the past two years is going to grade us. All the knowledge we acquired are going to go into a 1-hour-40-questions paper. It’s our choice what we want to do with it, but like Mrs. Tan once said, don’t stop now that it’s so near. We are all just one step away from finishing our dues. When we start good, we want to end good too. We’ll reap what we sow (Gosh, another cliché).
In these two years, we get to know some friends more than the others. I may not have talked or even know much about some of you. However, I will look at our class photos and see each and every one of you (that includes you Ms. Lo and Mr. Chua!). It will remind me that once upon a time you people were in my life for a good two years. It does not seem like a long time but it made a difference. There’s so much cheese in this, pardon me, but the whole I-am-so-going-to-graduate-and-move-on-to-another-chapter-of-my-life-probably-without-the-people-i-got-so-used-to-be-with-5-times-a-week in starting to sink deep in my skin.
Anyway, like I mentioned previously, we all have clique. In one point of another, if anyone from my clique or me, for that matter, has offended anyone of you, intentionally or not, we sincerely apologise. Some the jokes we all shared might have hurt anyone of you. Whatever it is, I don’t want any of us to leave this class a bitter person. We are all teens going up with hormones controlling our senses.
So. Study hard for our two papers and aim to shoot out of Milky Way. We shall all ace these two papers and enjoy what might probably be our last dinner together in months. =) part III would be much more interesting. I promise.
